K1 whitewater canoeist Siegbert Horn was the first canoe slalom gold medalist at the 1972 München Olympics, just ahead Austrian Norbert Sattler. The event was held in the Augsburg Eiskanal. Horn was 1971 World Champion and was runner-up with the team that year. In 1973 he was runner-up in canoe slalom singles, but won the team competition with non-Olympians Christian Döring and Wolfgang Büchner. In 1975 the team came in third and Horn was World Champion in singles. Domestically he won the former GDR championships in 1969 and 1971.
Trained as a turner, Horn later studied sports and worked as a graduate sports teacher. After German reunification he became a self-employed physiotherapist with his own practice in Elsterwerda. He later became a member of the German Canoe Slalom Hall of Fame. In August 2016 he lost his fight against cancer.
