Helmut Wagner was a flatwater canoeist who, with Jürgen Harpke, finished sixth in the C2-1,000 meters at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. In 1967 the pair won East German titles over 500, 1,000 and 10,000 meters, and in 1968 over 500 meters. In 1969 Wagner won the C1-10,000 meters title.
