Biography

Aimo Vartiainen made his international alpine skiing début for Finland at the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics, where he was 21st in the slalom and 53rd in the downhill, in addition to being disqualified in the combined. This made him one of the first two Finnish people to represent their country in alpine skiing, the other being Pentti Alonen. Vartiainen also competed at the 1950 World Championships, but did not reach the podium there either, although he did win silver in the slalom in an international university competition at this time. This was the end of his competitive career, but he continued to ski into his 80s.
