Biography

Irene Pepinghege, a flatwater canoeist from West Germany, reached the K-1 finals both at the 1972 München and the 1976 Montréal Olympics. In München she came in fourth and in Montréal she finished eighth. Pepinghage was born in the Netherlands but moved to West Germany due to the better training facilities. She gained German citizenship after her marriage with German Jochen Pepinghege in 1966 and worked in a coal research laboratory in Essen.

Pepinghege won two silver medals with the K-4 in 1966 and 1971, and a bronze medal at the 1965 Europeans. Domestically, she won West German titles in the K-1 in 1962 and from 1973-76, and in the K-2 in 1965, 1970, and from 1973-75, and also in the K-4 in 1967, and from 1974-75. She later started a very successful coaching career in Mülheim on Ruhr.
