Fritz Wagnerberger

West German Alpine skier Fritz Wagnerberger was not nominated for the downhill at the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics, the team instead choosing GDR-skier Eberhard Riedel, whereupon Wagnerberger wanted to withdraw from the giant slalom, but decided against it, eventually placing 15th in the event. At Innsbruck in 1964 he was 12th in the downhill. Wagnerberger won five West German national titles, three in downhill and two in giant slalom.

Wagnerberger later became president of the West German Skiing Association DSV (1970-78), and of the German Skiing Association after reunification (1994-2005), and afterwards was the first honorary president in the history of the DSV. In addition, he was vice-president of the NOC of the Federal Republic of Germany and then Germany from 1974-2006 and a member of the Board of German Sports Aid from 1999-2005. In 1995 he was awarded the Olympic Order in silver. He also received the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. By profession, Wagnerberger held a management job in Willy Bogner’s company.
