Basil Wellicome attended Shoreham College between 1940-44, before joining the RAF. He was a flying officer at the time of the 1948 Olympics, before going on to become a squadron leader. In 1947 he was a member of the RAF four-man crew that won the St. Moritz Gold Cup, beating a strong Swiss team into second place. Fifteen years after competing at the Olympics, Wellicome was still competing at St. Moritz at the highest level, and twice set the fastest time on the Cresta Run in the 1963 season.
