Biography

Henry Yglesias’ career as a figure skater was of little significance, but he served the National Skating Association for more than 40 years, and during that time, was a leading skating judge, until his retirement in 1937. An all-round sportsman, Yglesias attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and was a keen rower and county standard footballer and tennis player. He qualified as a solicitor, and became a partner in Lewis & Yglesias in 1902. A rare skating appearance saw him finish third (out of four) in the 1906 British Championship at Prince’s, and at the same venue two years later, he gave an impressive performance shortly before competing at the Olympics, where he took part in the compulsory figures but pulled out of the free skating programme due to illness. Yglesias was involved in the organization of the 1908 Olympic skating events. He published a book entitled Figure Skating in 1914, which was re-printed twice in the 1930s.
