Former ice hockey forward Hans Zach, brother of Martin Zach, became best known for his coaching career, and was nicknamed Volcano of the Alps. The trained butcher was one of the few ice hockey players who won the German Championships as both a player and coach. He was German national coach from 1999-2004 including the 2002 Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City, and also coached the clubs EC Ratingen, SV Bayreuth, Düsseldorfer EG, Kassel Huskies, Zürcher SC (Switzerland), Kölner Haie, Hannover Scorpions, and Mannheimer Adler. He won German Championships as a player with SB Rosenheim in 1982, and as a coach with Düsseldorfer EG from 1991-93 and with Hannover Scorpions in 2010.
Zach was inducted into the German Ice Hockey Hall of Fame as a coach. As a player, he played with EC Bad Tölz (until 1970), SC Riessersee (1970-74), Berliner SC (1974-77), EV Landshut (1977-79), and SB Rosenheim (1979-84). Zach played more than 600 Bundesliga matches and scored more than 260 goals. He also earned 80 international caps and scored 16 goals at the 1976-79 World Championships and the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. In 2003, he published his autobiography.
