German flatwater canoeist Gunar Kirchbach partnered Andreas Dittmer in the Canadian doubles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and won the gold medal over 1,000 meters. Over 500 meters the pair finished an unfortunate fourth. Kirchbach won two gold and three bronze medals at World Championships. He became a coach at the Regional Olympic Center in Leipzig after his competitive career. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
