Biography

German flatwater canoeist Lutz Liwowski participated in the 1996 Atlanta and the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His results were disappointing as he was one of the favourites on both occasions. He finished fourth and fifth in the kayak singles over 1,000 and 500 meters in 1996, and fifth over 500 meters in 2000. In the 1,000 meters semi-finals he was disqualified due to a false start. This was very controversial because his boat had slipped out of the hand of the starter. After this incident, the false start rule was lifted again.

Liwowski was more successful at World Championships, winning two gold (1998 and 1999) and three bronze medals, He was also European champion in 2001 and also won two more bronze medals. Liwowski studied mechanical engineering.
