Sprint canoeist Horst Mattern won West German K2-1,000 meters national titles in 1968, 1971-72 and, in 1968, won the K4-1,000 meters title. He added two more titles in 1970 and 1972, when he won the 4 x 500 metres relay. Over 10,000 meters, he won the K2 title in 1972 and the K4 title in 1965-68 and 1975-76.
In 1970 and 1973 he won two silver medals at World Championships, both in the K4-10,000 meters. Mattern was also a two-time Olympian, at Mexico-City in 1968, and München in 1972. In 1968, he was eliminated in the semi-final of the K1-1,000, and in 1972 he placed eighth in the K2-1,000 together with Hans-Jürgen Riemenschneider. He later became a long-time canoeing coach and sports administrator.
