Biography
German flatwater canoeist Ingo Spelly partnered Olaf Heukrodt in the C-2 1,000 at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and won the silver medal representing East Germany. Four years later at Barcelona, Spelly partnered Ulrich Papke and won the gold medal in the 1,000 metres and the silver medal in the 500 metres, now representing re-unified Germany.
From 1986-93, Spelly also won two gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the ICF Flatwater Canoe World Championships. Along with Papke he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award, in 1993. The pair also received the German media award BAMBI. Spelly and Papke also won one East German (1985) and three German national titles (1991, 1993 and 1995).
Until re-unification, Spelly was a sports soldier within the Nationale Volksarmee (National People’s Army). Later he became a fitness coach at Art’otel in Potsdam and later teacher at a vocational school, also in Potsdam.
