West German flatwater canoeist Ernst Steinhauer won the following medals at the Flatwater World Championships: gold in 1954 in the K2 500 m with Meinrad Miltenberger, and bronze with the K2 10,000 m with non-Olympian Helmuth Stocker. At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics he finished eighth in the K1 1,000 m. In 1952 he had won his first three West German national titles. Later he was engaged as a coach in his home club, and his son Gerhard won four West German national titles. For his sporting achievements he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf.
