Myanmar (MYA)

A weightlifter from what is now Myanmar, U Zaw Weik, competed for India in the 1936 Olympics. The National Olympic Committee of Burma was formed in 1947 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 20 June 1947 at the IOC session in Stockholm. After gaining independence in 1948, it made its Olympic début at the London Games that same year. It has competed at all Olympic Games since then, with the exception of the 1976 Olympics. The country changed its name to Myanmar in May 1989, and has used that name at the Olympics since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Myanmar has never attended the Olympic Winter Games, nor has it won a medal. It came close in 2000, when Win Kay Thi finished fourth in women’s 48 kg weightlifting class. Four Myanmar athletes have finished fifth at the Olympics – boxers Thein Myint (1960) and Tin Tun (1964) (losing in the quarter-finals), and weightlifters Gyi Aung Maung (1972) and Win Swe Swe (2000).
