The National Olympic Committee of North Yemen, formally the Yemen Arab Republic, was formed in 1971 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1981.
North Yemen first competed in the 1984 Olympic Games, with two athletes, none of which managed to reach the next round of competition. In 1988, there were eight competitors. The NOC’s best result came in this second participation at the Olympics, with judoka Mohamed Moslih finishing equal 19th of 41 competitors in the men’s lightweight class. After 1988, North Yemen athletes competed for the unified Yemen.
