In 1995, a Women and Sport Working Group was formed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to advise the IOC president on suitable policies to be developed in this field. The working group became a formal IOC Commission in 2004, the Women and Sport Commission. The commission had a consultative purpose and met once a year, forwarding its policies to the IOC Executive Board. Under President Thomas Bach the Women and Sport Commission was subsumed within the Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Commission.
The IOC website notes, “The role of the Gender Equality Diversity and Inclusion Commission is to advise the IOC Session, the IOC Executive Board and the IOC President on the development and implementation of the IOC women and sport policy and to promote equal opportunities for girls and women to participate in, and benefit from sport and physical activity.” Its current chair as of 2022 is Lydia Nsekera.
