The Commission for the Olympic Movement was formed in 1982 but its forerunner was the Tripartite Commission, which existed from 1975-1981. The Tripartite Commission was formed in response to complaints from the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (IFs), who felt that they had little say in the Olympic Movement, and no process through which to voice their opinions officially.
The Tripartite Commission consisted of members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the NOCs and the IFs. The Commission for the Olympic Movement has had a similar composition. The chair of this commission was always the IOC President, originally Lord Killanin (Tripartite Commission), and beginning in 1980, Juan Antonio Samaranch. The Olympic Movement Commission was disbanded in 2001. It was superseded by the Olympic Games Study Commission (also no longer recognized) and the Olympic Programme Commission.
