There was only one road racing event at Athina in 1896, which consisted of a race held on the same course as the running marathon, but on an out-and-back course over 87 km. The riders started in Athina on the Odos Kifisia, rode to Marathon, and then returned to Athina, finishing at the velodrome at Neo Phaliron. The winner was a Greek cyclist, Aristidis Konstantinidis, who won despite falling three times and then flatting just outside Athina. He borrowed a bicycle to finish, fell one more time, but caught up to the leader and was first across the line.
