At the Berlin Olympics, the gold medal for alpinism would be awarded for the third time, after 1924 and 1932, and it would also be the last time. In both 1932 and 1936, IOC had urged for an international federation representing the climbers. A federation for climbing was actually formed in late 1932, the Union Internationale des Association d’Alpinisme (UIAA) (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation), but lacking any serious interest in the prizes, the IOC removed the sport from the program in their first post-war session in 1946.
