Baseball at the 1956 Summer Olympics

Dates 1 – 1 December 1956
Non-medal Events 1

Baseball has often been a demonstration sport at the Olympics, as it was also demonstrated in 1912, 1936, 1964, 1984, and 1988. In 1992 it became an official Olympic sport, and was on the Olympic Program from 1992-2008, after which it was discontinued, along with softball. There is some impetus for the two sports to return to the Olympic Program at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as baseball is one of the most popular sports in Japan. In 1956 a single exhibition game was played between an Australian team and a United States’ team made up of military personnel from the Far East. The US team played the Olympic demonstration as part of a tour of Australia running from 25 November to 18 December. They had played two games against a New South Wales side prior to the Olympics, and played another 10 after the Games, losing one game, that to Australia on 5 December, 2-1.
