Boules refers to a variety of games in which a ball is rolled or thrown towards a target. It is often played recreationally in town squares or villages. There are a number of different variants of the games. It is often called lawn bowls in England, or pétanque in the south of France. There were two events held in 1900 at the Paris Exposition – jeu lyonnais and jeu de berges, both played by teams of four players. The two events were contested at the Parc de Vincennes. The sport has never been held at any other Olympics and is primarily popular in only a few European nations, such as France, Italy, Malta, and Croatia. There is no chance it will become an Olympic sport in the future, although it does have an international federation, Confédération Mondiale des Sports de Boules, and is recognized by SportAccord.
