The track program for 1980 was exactly the same as in 1976 – kilometre time trial, match sprint, individual pursuit, and team pursuit. These were conducted at the Olympic Velodrome, again an indoor velodrome as in 1976, with a 333.33 metre wooden-surface track, with 42° banked curves and 11° banked straights. East German sprinters won both short events, with Lothar Thoms taking the kilometre and Lutz Heßlich winning the match sprint. Because of the Soviet-led boycott in 1984, Heßlich would miss the Los Angeles Olympics, but he returned in 1988 at Seoul to repeat as sprint gold medalist. Robert Dill-Bundi of Switzerland won the individual pursuit while the Soviet pursuit team won that event.
