The program was enlarged slightly, adding a 4 x 10 km relay to the men’s 18 and 50 km events. The relay had been a part of the World Championships since 1933. There were 109 competitors representing 22 nations in the events. Six nations competed in cross-country skiing for the first time at the Winter Olympics – Bulgaria, Estonia, Great Britain, Greece, Romania, and Spain.
