The two ski jumping events at the 1972 Winter Olympics were held on the Ohkurayama jumping hill and were amongst the most memorable of all Winter Games competitions. The normal hill (70 m) produced an astonishing sweep of the medal positions by the home nation, their first medals in the history of Olympic ski jumping, whilst the large hill (90 m) was won by Wojciech Fortuna an unconsidered teenager from Poland who had benefitted from the gusty wind conditions. This was Poland’s first Winter Olympic gold medal.
