A football tournament was contested at the 1906 Olympics, with all the matches held on the infield of the Neo Phaliron Velodrome, where the cycling track events were contested. Spectators sat on the edges of the velodrome track to watch. Denmark won the tournament quite easily, against three teams effectively representing Greek cities – Athina, Thessaloníki, and Smyrna. Smyrna is located in modern-day Turkey but in that era was fought over by both Greece and the Ottoman Empire. The Smyrna team was more an international one, with players from Greece, France, Great Britain, and Armenia.
