There was only a single Nordic combined event, the individual, as had been standard since 1924, although this was the last Winter Olympics with this program, as a team Nordic combined event would be added in 1988. The event was the standard ski jumping on the normal hill, with three jumps allowed, only the best two to count, followed by a 15 km. cross-country ski race.
The events were held at Igman, a mountainous plateau in Ilidža, southwest of Sarajevo, with the jumps held at the Malo Polje in Igman, and the skiing held at Veliko Polje. During the Siege of Sarejevo from 1992-96, the jumping hills at Igman became a battleground, and they have not been used since that time. The Veliko Polje was also a site of the combat, and still contains unexploded ordinance as a hazard in the area.
