BMX had débuted as a cycling discipline at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. BMX events at the 2012 Olympics were held at the London Velopark, one of the city’s newly constructed venues for the Games. Once again, there were separate competitions for men and women. Latvia’s Māris Štrombergs won the men’s title, defending his gold medal from Beijing. Colombia’s Mariana Pajón won the women’s title, and she would return in 2016 to win a second gold medal in Rio de Janeiro.
