Trampolining events were held at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre in Tokyo 2020, also the site of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics events. It was the fifth consecutive appearance on the Olympic program for the discipline, having first made its début 21 years prior in Sydney. Both the women’s and men’s events were held over two days, 30 and 31 July, in which an equal number of 16 participants competed. The event format was unchanged from 2016, in which the top eight scores advanced to the finals from the qualifying rounds. Gymnasts were to perform both a compulsory and voluntary routine, each consisting of 10 skills, scored in slightly differing schemes. An addition was made to the scoring scheme since Rio 2016, with the addition of horizontal displacement as a category to the existing time of flight, execution and difficulty.
China would continue in its dominance with winning three medals, a silver in the men’s event and both a silver and gold in the women’s. With the silver, his fourth medal since 2008, Dong Dong would cement his place as the most successful trampolining gymnast since the introduction of the event in 2000.
