Modern pentathlon had first been contested at the Olympics in 1912 and it was again on the Olympic Program in 1920, with only an individual event, as in 1912. A team event would not be added to the Olympic Program until 1952, and it was discontinued after 1992. The five disciplines of modern pentathlon (riding, shooting, fencing, swimming, cross-country running) were contested at the venues for their separate sports. As in 1912, Swedes dominated, winning the first four places in Antwerpen as they had in Stockholm.
