The 1928 weightlifting program consisted of five weight classes, similar to the Olympic Program at every Olympics from 1920-36. The events were held at the Krachtsportgebouw (Power Sports Building) in Amsterdam, which also hosted the boxing and wrestling compeitions at the 1928 Olympics. The venue was located alongside the main Olympic Stadium. In this era, Germany and Austria were dominant in weightlifting, and they each won two gold medals, with Germany returning to the Olympics after being banned in 1920 and 1924. German and French weightlifters led the total medal list with three each.
