Description

The Japan Sumo Federation was established on 1 September 1946. Sumo would appear at the Olympics only once, with an exhibition of the sport at the Tokyo 1964 Games.

In 1980, the Japan Sumo Federation held the First All Japan Amateur Sumo Championships in which teams from overseas were invited to compete. As a result, this was the first international amateur sumo tournament to be held anywhere in the world. As the number of countries competing increased, the name of the event was changed to the International Sumo Championships in 1985.

On 10 December 1992, the International Sumo Federation (IFS) was established, and the name of the aforementioned championships were changed once again, this time to Sumo World Championships.

Recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and a member of the Association of the IOC-recognized International Sports Federations (ARISF), the IFS has 84 members as of January 2026. The organization is presided by Akio Toyoda (JPN), and its headquarters is located in Tokyo, Japan.
