Hungarian Ferenc Kocsis was the favorite, having won the 1978 World and 1978-79 European Championships. He was expected to be challenged by the defending gold medalist, Soviet Anatoly Bykov. They both made the final round, joined by Finland’s Mikko Huhtala. Kocsis had thrown Huhtala in round five in 5:44. Bykov defeated Huhtala in the first match of the final, winning on decision by 7-4. So Kocsis and Bykov then met for the gold medal, with Kocsis winning when Bykov was disqualified for passivity at 7:21. The actual decision was a passivity penalty against both wrestlers, but Kocsis was declared the victor, presumably for “less passivity.” Kocsis went on to win European titles again in 1981 and 1983.
