The race was described in the Chicago Daily Tribune as follows, “The sixteen-oared barge race was won by the Greek crew, which displayed the traditional prowess and watermanship of their nation.” The boats had 16 oarsmen with a “leader”, presumably serving as a coxswain and cheerleader.
