In the mano event of basque pelota, the ball is played with the bare hand. The three teams played a double round-robin, but the composition of the doubles teams was allowed to change, meaning a total of four players was active in each squad. The Spanish quartet won all of their matches with some ease (25-15 was the closest contest), but France and Mexico were evenly matched, each winning one of their matches. This meant a tie-breaker had to be played, which the French won quite handsomely, 25-6. The French team featured Michel Etchegoin, the reigning world champion in the mano doubles on the trinquete, a different kind of court from the one used at the Olympics.
