Ballooning events were contested at the 1900 Exposition Universelle alongside the Olympic Games, so in some record books one will see ballooning events considered part of the 1900 Olympics. Ballooning has never appeared at any other Olympic Games and will not be on the Olympic Programme anytime soon.
Within the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), also well known by its English name, World Air Sports Federation, the FAI Ballooning Commission conducts all ballooning activities, in particular World Records and international competitions. The federation was created on 14 October 1905, in Paris, France, with founding members from eight countries. The FAI is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and, as of January 2026, has over 100 members from 91 nations.
The most historic ballooning event is the annual Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett for gas balloons, created in 1906 and revived in 1983.
