A few motorcycle events were held at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, alongside the 1900 Olympic Games. Until recently, the Olympic Charter precluded sports depending on mechanical propulsion from appearing on the Olympic Programme, making a return of motorcycling to the Olympics highly unlikely.
The sport is governed by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), which had 121 national federations as members as of 2024.
