German flatwater canoeist Thomas Zereske finished fifth, partnering Alexander Schuck, in the C-2 500 at the 1988 Seoul Olympics representing East Germany. He also finished fifth in the C-1 500 at the 1996 Atlanta Games, now representing re-unified Germany. Four years later at Sydney, he finished fifth in the C-2 500, this time partnering Christian Gille.
At the ICF Flatwater Canoe World Championships, Zereske won two gold, three silver and five bronze medals between 1990-99. After his active career, he became chief national trainer in dragon boat sport as a graduated sports teacher. His teams won three medals at the 2002 World Championships, and two medals in 2003, including a 2002 World Championship. In 2004, he died from an aggressive leukemia, which was diagnosed just five days before his death.
