Bruno Biehler

Bruno Biehler was an architect and, like his brother Rudolf, a skiing pioneer. In 1908, he was German Champion in the Nordic combined – his brother won that title in 1906 and 1909. In the first Austrian Ski Jumping Championships in 1907 the brothers, and their colleagues Viktor Sohm and Dr. Karl Gruber, dared a sensational double jump from the Schattenbergschanze in Kitzbühel. In 1914, during a 1½ year trip to Asia, Biehler climbed Mount Fuji in Japan, probably the first winter solo ascent.

Bruno studied from 1907-10 in München. There, Bruno worked as a self-employed architect in the 1920s and 1930s. He mainly built war memorials and cemeteries but also barracks and churches. Under Roderich Fick he was involved in the planning of the new buildings in the “Führer City of Linz”. After World War II, he dedicated himself to rebuilding the bombed city of München. The ski lodge of the Academic Ski Club München was built in 1929 as the “Grünseehütte” on Lake Schliersee in accordance with Biehler’s plans, who himself was a member of the club. Today, the lodge bears the name of mountaineer Uli Wieland, a member of Günter Oskar Dyhrenfurth’s expedition to the Kangchenjunga mountain in the Himalayas.
