Hailing from the Dominican Republic Ignacio “Nacho” Espinal had a lengthy boxing career both at home and in Mexico. As an amateur Espinal fought in 40 bouts, winning 39 of them. He qualified for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, but did not show up for the weigh-in for his opening bout at the Games, allowing his Argentine opponent Roberto Urretavizcaya to advance via a walkover. A year later he had turned professional and won on points in his début. He fought 51 fights as a professional, winning 33 of them, including 25 by knockout. During the 1970s Espinal boxed across three weight divisions; light-fly, flyweight, and super-fly. In November 1974 he became the national flyweight champion after beating Pablito Jiménez on points. In the early 1980s Espinal lost his last three professional fights before he retired in 1982.
