Leon Viez was regarded as an excellent boxer with great prospects for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. However, a serious case of ophthalmia (inflammation of the eye; conjunctivitis) led to him not making the trip to London. Viez’s withdrawal was a serious blow, as he was regarded as a classy boxer, capable of upsetting the local British boxers. He went on to win the French featherweight title in 1909.
