Biography

Sergei Nemchinov began his professional ice hockey career with Krylya Sovetov Moscow of the Soviet Championship League in 1981, but also spent part of that season with Lokomotiv Moscow of the lower Pervaya Liga. He then spent three years with CSKA Moscow of the Championship League, before returning to Krylya Sovetov and remaining there through 1991. As the Soviet Union was breaking up, he was selected late in the 1990 National Hockey League (NHL) entry draft by the New York Rangers.

Nemchinov played with the Rangers through 1997, winning the Stanley Cup with them in 1994. He ended 1997 with a few games with the Vancouver Canucks, and then spent the next two seasons with the New York Islanders, before joining the New Jersey Devils in 1999. He finished out his NHL career with the Devils, capturing another Stanley Cup in 2000, and then spent the final two seasons of his professional career with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Superleague, retiring in 2004.

Internationally, Nemchinov represented the Soviet Union until its collapse, and then played for Russia. He won his first major international medal, bronze, at the 1982 European Junior Championships, and followed that up with golds at the 1983 and 1984 World Junior Championships. His first major senior victories came at the 1989 and 1990 Worlds, winning gold and silver at the Europeans respectively, followed by bronze in 1991, with another gold at the Europeans that year. With Russia, he won silver at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and was fifth at that year’s World Championships. After his retirement, he coached at both the club and national levels.
