Biography

Mathiew Schneider was an offensive defenseman who played for the United States at the 1998 and 2006 Winter Olympics. He also played internationally at the 1988 World Juniors and the 1996 World Championships.

Schneider played 1,289 games in the NHL over 22 seasons, scoring 233 goals and 743 points. Schneider broke in with the Montréal Canadiens in 1987 as a third-round draft pick, and played with them through the 1994/95 season. Schneider played on the Canadiens’ winning Stanley Cup team in 1993. After leaving the Habs, Schneider had an itinerant career, appearing successively with the New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, Vancouver Canucks, and Phoenix Coyotes. He also returned for part of the 2008/09 season with the Canadiens, and briefly played in 2009/10 in the American Hockey League with the Manitoba Moose.

After retirement Schneider joined the NHL Player’s Association as a special assistant. He later became special assistant to the NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr.
