René Spies was a bobsleigh pilot who finished sixth with Franz Sagmeister in the two-man bob at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In 2003 they won a bronze medal at the World Championships, and in 2001 and 2005 the pair also won bronze and silver at the Europeans and won the German national title on both occasions. With the four-man bob Spies placed fifth at the 2006 Torino Winter Games.
Spies won the overall two-man bob World Cup in 2001 with Marco Jakobs and a bronze medal at the 2003 European Championships. In 2006, he won the gold medal with the four-man bob at the German nationals. Spies then turned to coaching and was named German chief national coach in 2016.
