Jaroslav Obšut began ice skating at a young age at the local rink in Prešov where his father worked. As a junior Obšut went to Canada for a couple of months to stay with friends in Edmonton. Whilst there he attended a local ice hockey school and was offered a chance to stay in the country to play the sport. In 1994–95 he began his career playing in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, before going on to play for multiple teams across different Canadian leagues. In the early 2000s he played seven matches in the NHL, but suffered setbacks from injuries, eventually returning to Europe.
In 2002 Obšut was selected to represent Slovakia at the Salt Lake City Olympics, playing in all four games for the team. Two years later he joined the Swedish team Luleå HF, where he stayed for the next five seasons. For the last decade of his playing career he moved from club to club, playing in various leagues across Europe, including in Russia, Slovakia, and Romania. Following his retirement Obšut coached junior teams in Slovakia.
