Runner-up in the 1947 ASA Springboard Championship, Charles Johnson also competed in the European Championships that year. He won the Olympic springboard trial at Blackpool in 1948 but, a few weeks later, was again runner-up in the ASA Championship, beaten by Peter Heatly. The two men, along with Peter Elliott, were selected for the Olympics, with Johnson finishing 18th, Heatly 13th, and Elliott 23rd.
