Biography

After boxing at the 2004 Athina Olympics, Vanes Martirosyan turned professional in 2005. Undefeated in his first 34 pro fights, Martirosyan had three world title fights, but lost all three. He won the NABF and NABO light-middleweight titles in 2009 by defeating Willie Lee.

In November 2013 Martirosyan was defeated by Demetrius Andrade for the WBO super-welterweight title, losing by split decision despite knocking Andrade down in the first round. In May 2016 Martirosyan was defeated by Erislandy Lara for the WBA and IBO light-middleweight titles. He then stepped away from boxing for two years before facing Gennady Golovkin in May 2018 for the WBA, WBC, and IBO middleweight crowns, but Golovkin won by knockout in round two. Martirosyan had also lost a non-title bout in May 2015 to Jermell Charlo.

Those were the only losses of Martirosyan’s career. He retired after the Golovkin bout, finishing with a professional record of 36 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw. Sadly, Martirosyan died at only 39-years-old after a two-year battle with skin cancer.
