From 2001 to 2009 Russian triathlete Igor Sysoyev competed in more than 60 elite category races where he had multiple podium finishes in the European Cup and the Premium European Cup. Sysoyev finished 15th in the men’s race at the 2004 Athina Olympics before finishing ninth at the 2008 Games in Beijing. He started well in Beijing, completing the swim in second place, but then fell down the field in the cycling leg, but recovered during the run to finish in the top ten. After his retirement from international competitions he coached the Russian triathlon team from 2017 until 2020. In 2003 he married Irina Abysova, who also competed for Russia at two Olympics in the triathlon. Sysoyev was only 43-years-old when he was killed a car accident in May 2024.
