George Byers was an oil dealer with six children when he competed in the 1956 Olympics. Byers won the US title in C-1 in 1953 and 1955, and he and Daniel Bingham won the US C-2 title in 1951-53. Byers paddled for the Samoset Canoe Club. At the 1956 US Olympic trials he was third in the C-1 1,000 metres but teamed with Richard Moran to win the C-2 1,000.
