Sandy Campbell competed for the Ledyard Canoe Club as a whitewater kayaker. He won the Eastern US title in 1967 and 1968, and was second at the 1972 US Nationals, which qualified him for the Olympic team. Campbell competed at the 1967 and 1971 World Championships, with a best individual finish of 24th in 1967. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1969 and worked as a schoolteacher.
