Clawson began canoeing when he spent a summer in 1981 at Wesser, North Carolina, where he started paddling at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. He competed through 1996, retiring after a World Cup event in Brazil, and then turned his attention to wood and metal designs, focusing especially on welding many of his metal creations.
